The Oregon State Police reported a July 15 crash that occurred at 11:17 AM between a motorcycle and a tractor-trailer.
The investigation revealed that a Ducati motorcycle, operated by Nelson Martin, 42, was passing in the left lane when he lost control and went under the trailer of a Mack tractor trailer driven by Angela Biery, 50.
The motorcyclist suffered fatal injuries and died at the crash scene.
Be Aware of Motorcycle Dangers to Avoid Accidents
There are many motorcycle accidents where the other driver is at fault. Sometimes other drivers do not see the motorcyclist and pull out in front of them. Or they may lose control of their vehicle and hit the motorcyclist coming the other direction. In those accidents, the motorcyclist can file a lawsuit to recover damages for their injuries.
Common causes of motorcycle accidents
- Riding skill: Operating a motorcycle safely takes more skill than other types of vehicles. Just like with any vehicle, developing good operating skills takes time and practice. But the consequences of making a mistake on a motorcycle can be very serious. Many motorcycle accidents happen with new riders that lack good riding skills.
- Visual recognition: Motorcycles are harder to see than other vehicles. They also move easier and with more agility so they can move in and out of lanes quickly. Sometimes other drivers will not recognize the motorcycle because it is small and moves fast. This is even truer on the highway where 70 % of all accidents between motorcycles and cars occur.
- Road hazards: Any danger on the road, such as debris, blown tire, tree branch, or a pothole, is a small risk to a car or truck. But these hazards can cause deadly accidents for motorcyclists.
- High-speed dangers: Many motorcyclists drive at higher speeds than other vehicles. They can experience a ‘speed wobble,’ which is what happens when there is a misalignment of the front tire that makes it wobble. Speed wobbles can be a problem with the manufacture of the vehicle itself. In this case, it is possible the motorcycle manufacturer could be held liable for a product defect.
