PORTLAND, OR — A driver has come forward after learning his vehicle may have hit and injured a tow truck operator Sunday morning in northeast Portland, according to KATU2.
A hit-and-run crash was reported on a span of Interstate 84, near the exit to Northeast 43rd Avenue and the Cesar E. Chavez Boulevard overpass, at around 6:45 a.m.
Authorities said a 27-year-old tow truck driver had just finished loading a vehicle onto his truck when he was hit by a passing vehicle, believed to be another tow truck.
First responders arrived to find the injured operator lying on the roadway outside of his truck. He was rushed to a local hospital with serious injuries, including a broken arm and a broken leg.
On Tuesday, two days after the incident, Portland Police said they received a call from a man who believed he was responsible. He told authorities that while driving on I-84, an unsecured tarp had flown off another vehicle and landed on his windshield, momentarily blocking his vision. He recalled hearing a thump but could not identify what it was, even after stopping to remove the tarp at the next exit and trying to retrace his steps.
As of this writing, an investigation remains ongoing, and no arrests have been made and no citations issued. Authorities have said, however, that they have stopped searching for another suspect.
