How Common Are Brain Injuries?

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a common cause of death and disability across the country, particularly in car accidents. From 2006 to 2014, there was a 53% increase in TBI-related ER visits, hospitalizations, and deaths.

In 2014, approximately 155 people in the US died every day from TBIs, with many of those fatalities occurring in car accidents. Many brain injury attorneys would agree that people who survive a TBI from a car accident could have complications and symptoms that last days, weeks, and even the rest of their lives.

Effects from a traumatic brain injury can cause problems related to memory, thinking, sensation, movement, and emotional function. These issues affect the person but also their friends and loved ones.

If you were in a car accident and think you have a traumatic brain injury, you could experience the following symptoms:

  • Headache, fuzzy and blurry vision
  • Nausea and vomiting; dizziness
  • Sensitivity to noise or light; balance problems
  • Feeling tired all the time

Good brain injury attorney know that some of these symptoms can appear immediately after the car accident. Others may not be obvious for days or even weeks after the injury. Some people may not realize they have a problem until they try to resume their normal life, such as go back to work or care for their children.

If you think you have a TBI after a car accident, seek immediate medical attention, and then contact experienced brain injury attorney Bart Herron at The Herron Law Firm right now. You could be entitled to compensation for your injuries.

What Are the Possible Effects of a TBI After a Car Accident?

If you are in a car accident and truck your head, you could have a TBI. There are several types of TBIs based on how severe the impact was. If you have a mild TBI, you may have a mild concussion, be briefly knocked out or have a short change in mental status. But a severe TBI can involve a long period of unconsciousness and/or amnesia.

A TBI from a car accident can cause many short-term or long-term changes that affect thinking, memory, sensation, language, and emotion.

A TBI from a car accident also can lead to epilepsy and a greater risk for Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, and other brain diseases. Approximately 75% of TBIs that happen every year are from concussions and other types of TBI.

If you think you suffered a TBI in a car accident, the first thing you should do is seek medical treatment right away. If you know you hit your head at all in the accident, getting medical attention is wise even if you have no current symptoms. Symptoms can take days to develop.

Also, the CDC advises the following:

  • Get plenty of rest. If you rush back into your daily routine at school or work, you could make things worse.
  • Avoid doing anything that could cause you to hit your head.
  • Ask your doctor when it is safe to drive a car, ride a bike, or use heavy machinery.
  • Only take drugs your doctor approves. Do not drink alcohol until your doctor approves it.
  • Write things down if you have trouble remembering.

Long Term Treatment for TBI Patients

A person who has a moderate or severe TBI from a car accident will need long-term treatment. Long-term treatment for a traumatic brain injury patient is focused on managing symptoms or limitations they may experience. The treatment also helps the patient in living as independently as possible.

After being initially treated for their injuries, the TBI patient may be sent to a long-term care facility. They can be transferred to other facilities over time as their condition gets better or worse. During this phase of the accident victim’s recovery, the patient and their family are vital parts of the recovery process.

Before getting to this point, medical and physical therapy professionals should have helped the patient and family understand the nature of the TBI. They also should help them understand the limitations that can be expected throughout their life.

If the TBI patient needs long-term care, this can sometimes be provided at home. In an ideal situation, the person can live in their own home with a member of the family. When living at home, the patient could receive medical assistive services from in-home care providers.

Several factors dictate whether the patient can live at home with a severe TBI injury, including finances, how severe their limitations are, disabilities of the patient, and the abilities of family to care for the TBI victim.

There are other options to care for the TBI victim that are highlighted in the next article.

The Effects of Brain Damage

TBI Causes Chronic Health Concerns

Because the brain is the control and thought the center of the body when it sustains an injury there are severe ramifications to a person’s health and quality of life. These types of injuries are often the most catastrophic. When the brain is harmed in any way, your mobility and balance can be seriously affected. Not to mention you could experience reduced vision or severe memory loss. These types of damages can cause irreversible changes in you or a loved one’s life and in some cases, they could even lead to death.

Brain injuries can be caused by a wide variety of accidents or acts of negligence, but the most common brain injury claims involve car accidents, slip and falls, medical malpractice, or serious blow to the head. They are very often serious in nature and can result in long-term care being needed to return a person’s cognitive faculties back to what they were. Types of Treatment for Traumatic Brain Injuries

People who have been in car accidents may suffer a traumatic brain injury that affects their lives for months, years, or even permanently. According to the Brain Injury Association of America, there are two major types of treatment for brain injury victims.

The first focuses on saving the life of the car accident victim. The second type is intended to preserve brain functioning as much as possible.

When the car accident victim first gets to the hospital, they will receive intensive care and treatment that is intended to preserve their body functions so that organs continue to get blood and oxygen.

A ventilator may be used to help the person breathe if they cannot do so on their own. IV lines are used to provide fluids and medication to the car accident victim. A nasogastric tube can be used to give medicine and food directly to the victim’s stomach if they cannot swallow. The purpose of ICU treatments for the TBI victim is to stabilize them only.

After the person is medically stable, healthcare professionals start acute rehabilitation. This is overseen by doctors who are specialized in treating brain injuries. These professionals will work with the victim so they can try to relearn basic life activities, such as eating, drinking, putting on clothes, and using the restroom.

If you were in a car accident and have a TBI, you may be eligible for compensation from the other driver. Contact The Herron Law Firm for more information.

Other Long Term Treatment Options

If the patient with a serious TBI from a car accident cannot live at home, another option for long-term care is an independent living facility. This is a transition facility that is intended for a patient who could live on their own eventually but still needs support and therapy for now. There are different levels of therapy offered at independent living facilities, depending on the patient’s needs.

Another option is a skilled nursing home or residential facility. These are more long-term, intensive facilities. They could be needed for the TBI patient who has lost a lot of functionality. The patient may not be able to make significant improvements at a residential facility.

Patients in residential facilities or skilled nursing homes will continue to get therapy, but some may not be able to ever live independently again.

Management of TBI symptoms will go on most likely for the rest of the patient’s life. It is vital for the patient and family to continue to work with the treatment team so that actions can be taken if the TBI victim’s condition suddenly improves or worsens.

How a Traumatic Brain Injury Affects a Child

TBIs in children might grow into impairment or disability

Here are 4 causes of TBIs in kids:

    • MVA
    • Falls
    • Sports injuries
    • Child abuse

The CDC identified long-term unmet needs as being:

    • Social isolation
    • Memory problems
    • Problem-solving difficulties
    • Stress and anxiety
    • Emotional distress
    • Mood changes

Types of Mechanics of Brain Injury

    • Closed-head injury (and diffuse axonal injury), including coup and contrecoup injury
    • Penetrating brain injury
    • Blast injury
    • Secondary injury

If your child was injured in a car accident and has a TBI, the signs and symptoms could be different than those of adults. TBI symptoms for children may include:

    • Irritability
    • Restlessness
    • Changes in sleep patterns
    • Crying
    • Lethargy
    • No interest in toys
    • Personality changes
    • Changes in eating habits

The Brain Injury Association of America states that a TBI in a child presents unique problems. That is because a child’s brain is not fully developed; it is still developing and maturing. So, a child with a brain injury may have longer and more severe consequences than an adult.

The impairments of your child may not be obvious at first. But as the child grows, he could show physical, cognitive, emotional, and behavior problems. These can include physical challenges, inappropriate social behavior, and trouble learning or retaining new information.

If your child got a TBI in a car accident that was the other driver’s fault, it is vital to seek legal representation as soon as possible. The potential consequences of a brain injury on a child can be substantial and expensive. If the child has problems months and years down the road from the TBI, you will need compensation to provide long-term medical and psychological treatment for him.

The Herron Law Firm has the resources and skills to determine what type of treatment your child will need in the future by consulting with medical experts. Then their attorneys will work to get you as much compensation as possible in a settlement or verdict.
