CLATSOP COUNTY, OR — A 29-year-old man died Wednesday evening after a head-on crash that left a woman critically injured on the Astoria-Megler Bridge, reports KOIN 6 News.

The fatal wreck occurred on a span of U.S. Highway 101 that runs over the bridge in northwest Astoria. It was first reported just before 6:30 p.m.

According to Oregon State Police, the man was driving a 2002 Nissan Xterra northbound when he attempted to pass other cars on the bridge. Moments later, the Xterra collided head-on with a southbound 2013 Ford C-MAX SUV. The impact of the crash left both vehicles significantly damaged and caused the Xterra to become engulfed in flames.

First responders arrived to find the driver of the Xterra deceased at the scene, confirmed OSP.

The driver of the Ford C-MAX, a 64-year-old woman, was transported by airlift to a Portland hospital where she was listed in critical condition.

No further details have been disclosed at this time.
