MARION COUNTY, OR — A 34-year-old man died early Saturday morning after a single-vehicle accident in Salem’s Northgate neighborhood, reports KOIN 6 News.

The Salem Police Department said officers responded to the scene near Hawthorne Avenue and Hyacinth Street Northeast at about 4:00 a.m.

It was not immediately clear what caused the crash, but officials said a vehicle appeared to have traveled off the roadway and into a drainage ditch, where it crashed.

The victim, who was found in the vehicle, was pronounced deceased at the scene, confirmed officials.

No other injuries were reported. Police did not confirm whether the victim was the driver or a passenger.

The intersection was blocked off for multiple hours during the emergency response. By 8:45 a.m., the scene had been cleared and the area was reopened.

An investigation remains ongoing, but speed is believed to have contributed to the fatal wreck.
