PORTLAND, OR — One person died Monday evening after being struck by a vehicle on Southeast Powell Street in Portland’s Powellhurst-Gilbert neighborhood, reports KATU.
The fatal incident occurred on a span of the road (U.S. Highway 26) at Southeast 138th Avenue. Portland Police Bureau officers responded to the scene at around 6:58 p.m.
Authorities have not disclosed the sequence of events leading up to the crash, but first responders said the victim, believed to be an adult male, was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The driver, a 48-year-old Gresham man, stayed at the scene. After an evaluation, he was determined to have been intoxicated at the time of the crash and was transported to the PPB’s East Precinct to be processed for Driving Under the Influence of Intoxicants (DUII). Officials said the man was then booked into Multnomah County Detention Center, where he faces charges of DUII and “Criminally Negligent Homicide.”
An investigation remains in progress.
