COLUMBIA COUNTY, OR — Property damage was reported and a teen driver was arrested Wednesday night at McCormick Park in St. Helens, reports KATU2.
St. Helens Police were called to the scene in the park off of South 18th Street just before 9:00 p.m.
Authorities said the driver, 19, was seen driving a Ram pickup truck erratically and doing “cookies” within the park’s parking lot, nearly hitting witnesses. The pickup also allegedly collided with a park bench as it traveled over grass, through a dugout, and near the park’s Veterans Memorial.
Responding officers took the teen into custody. He faces multiple charges, including “Criminal Mischief II, Reckless Driving, and five counts of Reckless Endangering.”
The estimated cost of damage has not been reported, but Helens Park Department employees said multiple park structures were affected. Though the park remains completely open, full repairs could take up to a month.
An investigation remains in progress.
