PORTLAND, OR — A 35-year-old man was arrested Thursday morning, more than five months after a street racing crash that killed a pedestrian in east Portland, reports KGW8.

The fatal incident occurred at the corner of Southeast Start Street and 133rd Avenue on Saturday, August 27, at about 5:30 a.m.

Authorities said the victim, a 26-year-old woman, was waiting at a bus stop when she was hit by a speeding vehicle whose driver lost control while participating in a street race with another driver.

Investigators said the impact of the crash was so significant that the bus stop bench exploded. The victim was likely killed instantly, according to the medical examiner.

A news release from the Portland Police Bureau indicates the striking driver, Joseph Freeman, was taken into custody on a warrant for Manslaughter in the Second Degree. He has since been booked into Multnomah County Detention Center.
