MARION COUNTY, OR — A 26-year-old woman was hospitalized with critical injuries Saturday night after being struck by a vehicle in southeast Salem, according to KATU2.

The incident occurred near the corner of Lancaster Drive and Rickey Street Southeast, at about 8:30 p.m.

It was unclear what circumstances led up to the event, but witnesses told authorities the woman was hit by a driver in a pickup truck that fled the scene.

The victim was rushed to a local hospital before being transferred to Portland’s OHSU Hospital.

Based on witness accounts, officers with the Keizer Police Department were able to locate and apprehend the hit-and-run driver in the 1900 block of Claxter Road. The suspect, a 49-year-old man, was booked into Marion County Jail. He has since received multiple charges, including “assault in the second degree,” “reckless driving”, and “failure to perform the duties of driver to injured persons.” Court documents indicate he has been similarly charged in other incidents in the past decade and a half.

The Salem Police Traffic Team continues to investigate.
