PORTLAND, OR – A teen driver is facing 9 charges after running multiple red lights in east Portland, causing a major collision early Saturday morning.

According to KOIN, the officers spotted the driver of a BMW speed through the red light at SE 122nd Street and Division Street at about 12:40 p.m. and initiated a pursuit. The chase was terminated when the driver ran a second light at Powell Boulevard and slammed into a Nissan sedan.

Officers were able to extricate a passenger from the BMW before it became engulfed in flames. The driver, 19-year-old Alejandro R. Velazquez attempted to flee the scene on foot but was caught and arrested a short time later.

The 21-year-old passenger of the BMW was sent the hospital along with the 25-year-old driver of the Nissan with serious injuries.

Velazquez was also hospitalized as a precaution. He has since been released and booked into the Multnomah County Jail on charges including: 2 counts of assault, 2 counts of reckless endangering, trying to elude by vehicle and on foot, failing to perform the duties of a driver, reckless driving, and DUI.
