YAMHILL COUNTY, OR — A 52-year-old Newberg man died Monday afternoon after a head-on crash on Oregon State Highway 18 near Dayton, reports KOIN 6 News.

Oregon State Police said officers responded to the scene near milepost 52, between Highway 99W and the Dayton Bridge, at about 4:25 p.m.

A preliminary investigation indicates the man was driving a 2003 Dodge Durango westbound on OR-18 when, for reasons still unclear, the Durango veered into the oncoming lane. OSP said the Durango then collided head-on with a Freightliner tractor-trailer.

The Newberg man suffered fatal injuries in the wreck and was pronounced deceased at the scene, confirmed officials.

The driver of the big rig, a 34-year-old man, was not reported hurt.

A section of the roadway was shut down for four hours during the response and investigation, which remains ongoing.
